Baseball opens spring break trip with loss to unbeaten UT-Dallas

FORT MYERS, Fla. — The Otterbein baseball team opened its spring break schedule with a 14-7 loss to unbeaten University of Texas at Dallas on Friday in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.

The Basics

Otterbein Stat Leaders
  • Senior Charlie Greenlief posted two hits, one RBI and two runs.
  • Sophomore Stevie Monokandilos tallied two hits, two RBIs and one run.
  • Senior Max McCann recorded two hits, including a double, and one run.
  • Senior Logan Ullom added two hits and one run.
  • Senior Jake Brown had a double, one RBI and one run.
  • Senior Zac Taylor finished with one hit and two RBIs.
  • Senior Bryson Bell got the pitching start for the Cardinals and recorded four strikeouts over 3.2 innings.
Game Highlights
  • Both teams scored a run in the first inning. The Cardinals scored on an RBI sac fly from Greenlief that brought McCann home.
  • UTD added a run in the top of the second, but Otterbein tied the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the third on an RBI walk from Taylor.
  • The Comets plated a pair of runs in the top of the fourth, but Otterbein responded with a run in the bottom of the frame on an RBI groundout from graduate student Jamie Perebzak to get the Cardinals within one, 4-3.
  • Otterbein took a 5-4 edge in the bottom of the fifth courtesy of an RBI double from Brown and RBI single from Monokandolis.
  • The Cardinals added to their lead in the sixth, getting RBI singles from Taylor and Monokandolis for a 7-4 edge.
  • The Comets put together a big seventh inning, scoring seven runs to take an 11-7 advantage.
  • UTD capped the scoring with three more runs in the eighth inning, all coming via a home run.
  • UTD out-hit Otterbein by a 15-11 margin. Otterbein committed four errors to the Comets' one.
Notables 
  • Named the OAC Player of the Year and CSC Second Team Academic All-America in 2024, Perebzak ranks ninth all-time at Otterbein in hits (197), tied for fourth in doubles (43), 11th in home runs (20) and third in RBIs (170).
  • Ullom has 84 hits, 20 doubles and 41 RBIs in his Otterbein career. He has a team-high 12 hits and four doubles this season. He has hit safely in five straight games and six of the seven games this season. Five of those were multi-hit games.
  • McCann has 52 hits and 12 doubles in his Otterbein career.
  • Head coach George Powell is in his 26th year at Otterbein and has an all-time record of 610-425-1 at the helm of the Cardinals. He is a six-time OAC Coach of the Year honoree and has coached the Cardinals to three OAC regular-season championships and six OAC Tournament titles.
