Baseball outlasts DePauw (Ind.) for 8-7 victory

WESTERVILLE — The Otterbein baseball team defeated DePauw (Ind.) 8-7 in a back-and-forth non-conference game on Sunday. Sophomore Nolan James, freshman Trae McAninch and graduate student Jamie Perebzak combined for 10 hits to lead the Cardinals.

  • James tallied four hits, one RBI and two runs.
  • McAninch posted three hits, including a double, and four RBIs.

Game Highlights
  • Trailing 2-0, Otterbein scored a run in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI double from McAninch.
  • The Cardinals tied the score at 2-2 via an RBI single from McAninch in the bottom of the fourth.
  • After the Tigers plated a run in the top of the fifth, the Cardinals scored three in the bottom of the frame for a 5-3 lead. James scored on a wild pitch, and McAninch added a 2-RBI single.
  • DePauw added a run in the top of the seventh on a solo homer to get back within one, 5-4.
  • The Tigers took a 7-5 lead in the top of the eighth, but the resilient Cardinals answered right back with three runs in the bottom of the frame for an 8-7 edge. Perebzak and Ullom led off with back-to-back singles, and James added an RBI single. Senior Charlie Greenlief scored Ullom on a sac fly that tied the score at 7-7, and freshman Gavin Scott drove home what proved to be the winning run when he reached safely on a fielder's choice.
  • Conrad secured the victory for the Cardinals with a 1-2-3 top of the ninth, inducing a groundout and two flyouts.
  • Otterbein out-hit DePauw by a 14-11 margin. Otterbein committed two errors to DePauw's one.
Notables 
  • Named the OAC Player of the Year and CSC Second Team Academic All-America in 2024, Perebzak is Otterbein's all-time leader in RBIs (192). He ranks third all-time at Otterbein in hits (228), third in doubles (49) and is tied for seventh in home runs (25).
  • Ullom has 118 hits, 26 doubles and 51 RBIs in his Otterbein career.
  • Entering Sunday, Ullom ranked second in the OAC in hits (45), tied for third in doubles (10) and seventh in runs (29) on the season. Perebzak and James were tied for second in home runs (5). Perebzak and Greenlief were tied for eighth in RBIs (26), and Perebzak was tied for 10th in runs (27). Greenlief was tied for sixth in hits (39).
  • Head coach George Powell is in his 26th year at Otterbein and has an all-time record of 621-439-1 at the helm of the Cardinals. He is three wins away from tying Dick Fishbaugh (624) for most coaching wins in program history and fifth all-time in OAC history. Powell is a six-time OAC Coach of the Year honoree and has coached the Cardinals to three OAC regular-season championships and six OAC Tournament titles.
  • Sunday marked the first meeting between Otterbein and DePauw since 2018, when the Cardinals came away with a 17-3 win in Westerville.
