No. 19 volleyball battles to split at Hanover

HANOVER, Ind. – Wrapping up the weekend at the Hanover Invitational, the No. 19 Otterbein University volleyball team split its final two matches. Otterbein won 3-1 over DePauw University, before dropping a tough five set match to Hanover in the second match.

GAME ONE: Otterbein 3 DePauw 1

After the Tigers won the opening set by a 25-20 margin, the Cardinals avenged an opening set loss by dominating the final three sets. Otterbein won the final three sets all by a 25-16 score.

Junior Lexi Scott slammed a season-best 19 kills off of 31 attempts and just two errors. Scott was instrumental in Otterbein's offense, turning in a dazzling .548 attack percentage for the match. Emerson Baum was the only other Cardinal to finish in double figures, notching 14 kills and four service aces.

Dropping their first set since Aug. 30, the Cardinals made quick work of DePauw the rest of the way. A 6-0 bolstered the Cardinals in the second set, with two of Baum's aces coming in that stretch. Ending the set on a 4-1 run, Otterbein tied the contest up at one set apiece.

In the third set, Otterbein continued to pressure DePauw, with a 10-2 run to create significant distance from the Tigers. The Cardinals continued to pour on the points, with a pair of Gabi Whittenburg aces to inflate the lead to 18-9. Baum and Brooke Barb tallied back to back kills, ending the set to give the Cardinals a two sets to one advantage. Barb finished with eight kills in the win.

With the score knotted at eight in set three, another large run by Otterbein would control the tempo for the remainder of the set. Holding a steady lead after that run, the Cardinals ended the set on a 3-0 run to secure the victory.

Senior Olivia Vitaz continued to run the offense, contributing 38 assists. Defensively, she added nine digs. Ashley Kefauver's 13 digs led the Cardinals, while fellow junior Makenzie Schellenberger was the other Otterbein player to finish with double-digit digs. Sophomore Chandler Crowell marked a new career-high with five total blocks – a game-high.

As a team, Otterbein hit at a .348 mark, limiting the Tigers to a .092 attack percentage. In the final two sets, the Cardinals registered blistering percentages over .400.

GAME TWO: Hanover 3 Otterbein 2

In an incredibly competitive second match, the Cardinals were reverse swept by the Panthers. After winning the first two sets by 25-22 and 25-23 scores, Hanover answered back with 25-23 and 27-25 victories to force a fifth set. In the final set, the Panthers jumped out to a 4-0 lead and never looked back.

Maddie Mergen set a new career-high in kills, as she and Scott's 18 led the way. Mergen also finished with six blocks for the Cardinals. Barb totaled 16 kills – a new career-high as well. Kevauver's 24 digs were a career-high and a Cardinal best. Elise Adelman (15), Schellenberger (11) and Grace Ganz (10) all finished with double-digit digs in the second contest. Adelman led the Otterbein offense, tallying 38 assists as well.

Otterbein returns to the Rike Center on Friday, welcoming Denison University for a 6:30 p.m. match.
