Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's soccer blanks Oberlin in home opener

WESTERVILLE – Backed by a pair of goals from senior Rae Ehrbar, the Otterbein University women's soccer team dominated possession in a 2-0 victory over Oberlin College. The Cardinals held a sizable edge in shots and corners to improve to 2-3 on the young season.

Otterbein held the tempo for nearly the entirety of the first half, as the Yeowomen were unable to record a shot on goal. The Cardinals continued to pressure the Yeowomen back third before breaking through in the 36th minute. Ehrbar netted her first goal of the evening to get the hosts on the board. Sophomore Natalie Smith played a beautiful ball ahead to Ehrbar, who drove a shot to the lower right of the goal for a 1-0 Otterbein lead in late in the opening period.

Late in the period, the Cardinals had a great look to double the advantage, but a header ricocheted off the post and away, keeping it a one goal game at the break.

Throughout the second half, Otterbein had plenty of chances, but could not cash in to add to its lead until late in the contest. With exactly six minutes remaining, Oberlin was whistled for a handball in the box, setting the Cardinals up for a penalty kick. Ehrbar stepped up and calmly buried her team-leading third goal of the season, giving the hosts a much-needed insurance goal.

Anchored by Kylie Hast and a strong back line, Ella Schwertfager picked up her first clean sheet of the season. Playing with a one-player advantage from the 22nd minute on, the Cardinals did not concede a shot or corner for the entirety of the match.

The Cardinals remain on their home pitch this weekend when they host the back half of a men's and women's doubleheader. Otterbein will play Franciscan University of Steubenville at 4 p.m.
