No. 21 volleyball earns big win over Big Red

WESTERVILLE – In front of its home crowd, the No. 21 ranked Otterbein University volleyball team made quick work of Denison University, knocking off the Big Red in straight sets. The Cardinals improved to 10-1 overall after claiming the match by 25-10, 25-23, 25-17 set wins.

Sophomore Emerson Baum's 13 kills led the Cardinals as the only player to finish in double figures. Olivia Vitaz dished out 27 assists in the win. Defensively, Otterbein was led by an 11-dig effort from Ashley Kefauver

The story was all Otterbein in the first set, rolling to a 15 point win. A 5-0 run with Baum back to serve increased the hosts' advantage to 17-5, as she recorded an ace and a kill in that run.

Denison regained composure in the second set, trading blows with the Cardinals. As Otterbein trailed 22-21, a service error knotted the score at 22 and sent the ball back to the home squad. Maddie Mergen and Baum recorded a block and Gabi Whittenburg followed with an ace to push the Cardinals to set point. Two points later, a kill from Baum secured a 2-0 lead.

Otterbein fired off six straight points to end the match, as Emma Steiger was solid at the service line. A block from Baum and Vitaz ended the match to finish off the sweep of Denison. Baum totaled seven blocks in the match and Vitaz finished with six.

The Cardinals finished with nine aces compared to just one by the Big Red. Steiger's three aces led the team in the victory.

Tomorrow, the Cardinals head to Ohio Wesleyan for an 11 a.m. match.
