Lucky Seven: MBB defeats Capital for seventh straight victory

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – In front of a packed and energetic Rike Center, the Otterbein University men's basketball team won its seventh straight game, defeating Capital University 85-74. The Cardinals improve to 12-2 overall and 4-1 in the OAC.

Jarius Jones tied his Otterbein-best with 23 points off the bench, highlighted by a dunk early in the first half that brought the entirety of the Cardinal crowd to its feet. Jones was 13 of 14 from the foul line in the win, adding four rebounds and two steals. Freshman Dominic Theado added 14 points, as Troy Scowden finished a board shy of a double-double, with 13 points on a 5 of 6 shooting night.

Capital claimed an early lead, draining seven 3-pointers in the first half. After the Comets buried another 3-pointer, Otterbein fell behind 28-18 with just over eight minutes remaining in the first period. The Cardinals would go on to close out the half on a 21-8 run to pull ahead at the break. Noah Gamble ignited the run with a pull up jumper, followed by three big buckets from Theado.

With 2:56 on the clock, Carter Piatt-Brown found Reece Huber for a corner try, cutting Capital's lead to 34-32. Piatt-Brown dished out a game-high six assists in the win. Just over a minute later, Otterbein claimed the lead with a tip in from Scowden. Scowden pulled down an offensive rebound and sank the putback as time expired, lifting the Cardinals to a 39-36 halftime advantage.

Out of the half, Capital cut the deficit to two points four minutes in, but Huber immediately answered with a three at the other end to boost the lead back to five. After a turnover by the Comets, four straight points from Scowden and another Huber bucket pushed the Cardinals to a double digit lead. Otterbein extended the lead to as many as 18, and would continue to hold off late pushes by the Comets. Backed by Jones at the foul line, the hosts sank free throws to seal the win.

Otterbein shot 49 percent from the floor, as the visitors turned in an effort just shy of 39 percent. Led by Jones, the Cardinals outscored the Comets in bench points, 48-3.

The Cardinals remain home on Wednesday to host Ohio Northern University. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
