Otterbein throttles Ohio Northern on the road

ADA, Ohio – Fueled by a complete team effort, the Otterbein University women's basketball team rolled to a 77-43 win at Ohio Northern. In the second and fourth quarters combined, the Cardinals outscored the hosts, 42-15 to roll to their fifth OAC win.

Four Otterbein players scored in double figures, led by Kyla Irby's 13 points. Irby, the OAC's leading free throw shooter, was a perfect 7 of 7 at the foul line. Both Abby Rawlings and Kadence Conley chipped in with 11 points apiece, with Mattie Walburn adding 10 for the visitors.

The Cardinals led from the jump, after a Rawlings three to start the game had Otterbein in front for all 40 minutes. At the end of the first quarter, Otterbein led 17-10 before a dynamic second period.

A three by the Polar Bears cut the lead to four, but Conley answered at the other end to push the Cardinals back up by seven. Otterbein continued to pressure ONU, as a Madilyn Stechschulte 3-pointer doubled up the Polar Bears, with the Cardinals ahead 32-16. The Cardinals closed out the first half strong, as Conley's second triple of the quarter in the waning seconds pulled Otterbein ahead 38-19 at the break.

Ohio Northern battled with the Cardinals in the third quarter, but were never able to truly cut into the lead. With Otterbein holding a large lead heading into the final quarter, the Cardinals inflated the advantage to their largest of the night. Rawlings, Abby Dickson and Ally Carr all buried triples in the final 10 minutes.

Turning defense into offense, Otterbein scored 25 points off 21 Polar Bear turnovers. Aided by Walburn and Conley, Otterbein's bench outscored ONU's 37-15. With a 9 of 17 mark from beyond the arc, the Cardinals nailed the most threes in a game this season, shooting just under 53 percent.

Freshman Cameron Sparks led the way on the glass with six rebounds, five on the offensive side. Kiara Hudgins dished out a team-best four assists, blocking two shots as well.

The Cardinals travel to Muskingum on Saturday to play the second half of a men's and women's doubleheader. Tip off against the Fighting Muskies is set for 3 p.m.
