Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

No. 13 Mount Union narrowly pulls past No. 21 Otterbein

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – In a battle of nationally ranked teams that came down to the wire, the No. 21 Otterbein men's basketball team dropped a tight 74-69 decision to No. 13 Mount Union. The Cardinals see their 11-game win streak snapped, moving to 16-3 overall, 8-2 in the OAC.

In a tightly contested game that featured nine ties and 11 lead changes, neither team held more than a five point advantage. Mount Union scored as time expired at the end of the first half to take a slim 35-33 lead into the break.

The teams continued to trade blows throughout the entirety of the second half. Otterbein held its largest lead at five points twice in the final six minutes of the contest, but could not hold off a scrappy Purple Raider squad. With 2:32 remaining, a jumper from Mount Union pushed the visitors ahead 64-63, a lead they would keep for the rest of the game.

Mount Union sank free throws down the stretch to keep Otterbein at bay, eventually making it a two possession game in the final seconds.

Senior Troy Scowden led Otterbein with 17 points. Julian Heckman played the full 40 minutes, adding 12 points, eight rebounds, four assists and six steals in another strong performance. Jarius Jones was the only other Cardinal to finish in double figures, totaling 11 points and bringing down seven rebounds.

Otterbein uncharacteristically struggled from the foul line, making just 11 of its 21 attempts and shot 35.7 percent from the floor.

The Cardinals will head to Marietta on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. start against the Pioneers.
