Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Strong effort falls short against No. 20 Baldwin Wallace

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Despite a strong effort and plenty of grit, the Otterbein University women's basketball team came up just short in a 64-55 setback to No. 20/16 Baldwin Wallace University.

Otterbein was led by sophomore Mattie Walburn's 14 points, as Madilyn Stechschulte tacked on 12. Abby Rawlings was the final Cardinal to score in double figures, adding 10 points and dishing out seven assists. Cameron Sparks led the hosts on the glass, pulling down 10 rebounds.

The Yellow Jackets started off hot, building a 15-7 lead with two minutes remaining in the first period. The Cardinals answered with jumpers from Anna Waskiewicz and Kyla Irby, but a BW bucket as time expired saw the visitors take a 17-11 lead after one.

Trailing by 12 with 4:38 before the half, Otterbein closed out the second quarter on a 14-3 run to cut BW's lead to one. Walburn sank a triple to ignite the run before a basket by Stechschulte put Otterbein within striking distance. Walburn buried another three and Sparks hit a jumper inside, making it a one possession game. A pair of Stechschulte free throws and a Walburn pull up capped the run, with the Yellow Jackets leading 28-27 at the half.

Baldwin Wallace used hot 3-point shooting in the third to extend the lead back to double digits. In the third quarter alone, the visitors connected on 5 of 8 from beyond the arc and outscoring Otterbein 23-10 in the period. The Cardinals rallied to cut the deficit to single digits in the fourth, but clutch buckets from the Yellow Jackets sealed the road win.

The Cardinals shot just 23.5 percent from three, as BW connected on 43.5 percent from beyond the arc. Baldwin Wallace was an efficient 22 of 44 from the floor, compared to a 23 of 70 night by Otterbein.

On Saturday, the Cardinals host Capital in the first rivalry game of the season. Tip off against the Comets is set for 5 p.m.
