Men's soccer scores two late goals; defeats Wittenberg 2-1

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – In thrilling fashion, the Otterbein University men's soccer team rallied to a 2-1 victory over Wittenberg University. Trailing 1-0, the Cardinals scored twice in the final 10 minutes to prevail over the Tigers, with sophomore captain Eli Traber netting the game-winner.

The teams played to a scoreless opening period, despite Otterbein holding possession for a majority of the half. Otterbein's best chance came late in the first half, when Luke Butzier rifled a shot from the top of the box, but right at the Wittenberg keeper, keeping the score locked at 0-0.

Wittenberg broke the scoreless tie in the 65th minute. A throw in by the Tigers deflected off the Otterbein defense before trickling in off the right foot of Wittenberg's Asher Donahue for a 1-0 advantage.

In the 82nd minute, Nate Werthmuller's long throw in was tapped by a Wittenberg defender for an own goal, tying the game at 1-1. One minute later, Otterbein was awarded a free kick where Werthmuller played a beautiful ball into the box. After being knocked around, the ball was attempted to be cleared by the Wittenberg defense, but a hard attempt ricocheted off the chest of Traber and into the back of the net for the Otterbein advantage.

Otterbein outshot the Tigers, 18-8, with Jayden Burdine making four saves in goal.

The Cardinals kick off conference play on Saturday when they travel to Mount Union. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. with the women's game to follow at 4 p.m.
