Football falls at Ohio Northern

ADA, Ohio – A strong first half was not enough, as the Otterbein University football team dropped a 62-24 decision to Ohio Northern University. The Cardinals led 17-14 at halftime, but the Polar Bears swung all the momentum in their favor in the second half.

Ohio Northern got on the board first on their first drive of the game. After a 16-yard touchdown pass by the hosts, the Polar Bears doubled their lead on their next possession. Trailing 14-0, on the first play of the next drive, Duke Corley connected with Grant Hartley for a 99-yard touchdown. Hartley received the pass at the Otterbein 5, beat his defender and raced to the end zone for a 14-7 ONU lead.

Late in the first quarter, the Cardinals evened the score at 14-14, thanks to a 90-yard pick six by freshman Donovan Delph. With the Polar Bears in the red zone, a ball tipped off an ONU receiver landed in the hands of Delph, tiptoeing the sideline for the score. The interception was Delph's OAC-leading fourth of the season.

Otterbein claimed a 17-14 lead early in the second quarter, as senior kicker Braylon Balandra nailed a 30-yard field goal. The 17-14 margin would hold into halftime.

Out of the half, the Polar Bears scored early and often, scoring four touchdowns in the period. Otterbein scored its final touchdown late in the third when Corley found Daniel Shaffer for a 28-yard touchdown.

Kaden Bruner's 11 tackles led the Cardinals, adding one sack for eight yards. Eli Helton chipped in with eight total tackles, while Balandra and Wyatt Yesnick combined to go a perfect 3 for 3 in PATs.

The Cardinals will have another tough test next weekend when they head to No. 17 Baldwin Wallace. Kickoff is set for 1:30 p.m. against the Yellow Jackets.
