Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

No. 19 volleyball rolls to two non-conference wins

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Back in the Rike Center, the No. 19 Otterbein University volleyball team cruised to a pair of wins over Ohio Wesleyan and Case Western Reserve. The Cards knocked off OWU (25-18, 22-25, 25-18, 25-15) before turning around and sweeping the Spartans (25-20, 25-20, 25-18). With the wins, the Cardinals improve to 19-3 overall and are on a six game win streak.

GAME ONE: Otterbein 3 Ohio Wesleyan 1

In set one, the Cardinals came out firing, immediately taking control from the jump. With their largest lead being 19-11, Otterbein controlled the set in all categories, hitting an impressive .268 as a squad, compared to a .079 from the visitors. A block from Emerson Baum and Elise Adelman secured the Cardinal victory in the opening set, 25-18.

During set two, the teams traded points back and forth, until three service aces in a row from Ohio Wesleyan forced an Otterbein timeout. With the Battling Bishops up 15-13, the Cardinals rallied back, gaining the lead 17-16, thanks to a kill from senior Lexi Scott. The Battling Bishops then answered with a series of points that put them up 20-17, remaining in control for the rest of the second set. OWU claimed the set two victory, 25-22.

In the third set, the Cardinals got off to a hot start, opening the set with a commanding 8-1 lead. Thanks to an early service run from Baum, Otterbein maintained their control through the whole set. Shining in all categories, including hitting at a .423 clip as a team, Otterbein took set three 25-18.

After a long delay and a replay, set four got underway with the Cardinals grabbing the lead early. Otterbein did not allow an OWU lead in the fourth set, with their largest lead being 20-11. The Cardinal arsenal fired off five service aces, compared to none from the visiting Battling Bishops. A stuff block from Chandler Crowell and Courtney Post, mixed with a kill from Post secured the dominant set four win, 25-15.

Offensively, Scott led the way with 12 kills, with Post right behind her with nine. Adelman added 28 assists and four aces to the Cardinal arsenal, with Baum also firing off four aces for the Otterbein crew. On the defensive side, senior libero Ashley Kefauver tallied 17 digs, with Makenzie Schellenberger adding 15.

GAME TWO: Otterbein 3 Case Western Reserve 0

A run midway through the opening set turned a 10-7 lead into a 15-7 advantage for the hosts. With Schellenberger back to serve, The Cardinals hit five straight kills – three off the hand of Scott – to build the large lead. Despite the Spartans closing the gap to 21-19, Baum floored back to back kills before an attack error by CWRU pushed the Cardinals to set point. Adelman's kill sealed the 25-20 set one victory.

Otterbein maintained momentum in the second set, using another service run from Schellenberger to inflate the lead. Once more, the visitors worked to trim the lead, but Crowell's kill secured the 25-20 win.

In the third, Otterbein finished off the Spartans as a Baum kill ended the sweep, 25-18. The Cardinals got off to a hot start in the final set with a 7-1 run that kept CWRU at bay for the remainder of the set. In the third set, Otterbein attacked at a .324 clip, while the Spartans struggled with a .103 percentage.

Baum's 15 kills led the Cardinals, while Scott added 12. Crowell turned in another solid effort with 10 digs and eight kills. Baum also contributed four total blocks and an ace.

The defense was led by Kefauver's 17 digs, with Schellenberger recording 16. Adelman finished with 42 assists in the win.

The Cardinals will be back for OAC play when they take on the Wilmington College Quakers at home on Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 7 p.m.
