Kefauver records 1,000th career dig, volleyball sweeps Marietta

MARIETTA, Ohio – Ashley Kefauver became the newest member of the 1,000 career digs club, as the No. 15 Otterbein University volleyball team rolled past Marietta College in straight sets. Despite a packed Ban Johnson Arena, the Cardinals made quick work of the hosts, buoyed by dazzling performances from across the lineup.

Kefauver finished the night with 22 digs to achieve the career milestone. Otterbein was stellar on offense as well, with a trio of Cardinals recording double-digit kills. Juniors Chandler Crowell and Emerson Baum finished with 12 apiece, with Courtney Post tallying 11.

In the first set, the Cardinals attacked at a blistering .361 clip compared to an even 0.00 by the Pioneers. Holding a 9-5 lead early, Otterbein used a 4-0 run to create distance, highlighted by two Baum kills and an ace off the hand of Crowell. Another small run by the Cardinals featuring two more Baum kills extended the lead to 20-7. Crowell sealed the seal with a dominant 25-13 win.

Marietta regrouped in the second set, eventually taking the Cardinals to set point with a 24-23 lead. Otterbein fired off three consecutive points to steal the momentum and silence the BanJo, with Crowell leading the charge. Crowell slammed a kill and followed with a solo block to push Otterbein ahead 25-24. The Cardinals finished the set with a 26-24 victory courtesy of a Pioneer attack error.

Otterbein continued to keep pace in the third set, consistently leading after an early 5-0 run. With the win, the Cardinals improved to 22-3 overall and a sparkling 7-0 within OAC play.

Elise Adelman led the Cardinal offense, dishing out 39 assists. Fellow senior Makenzie Schellenberger joined Kefauver in double-digit digs, adding 14.

The Cardinals will wrap up OAC play on Saturday for Senior Day and the Battle for the Oar, hosting Capital University. Game time against the Comets is scheduled for 4 p.m.
