Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Four finish in double figures as (RV) Cardinals win at Waynesburg

WAYNESBURG, Pa. – A balanced effort saw the (RV) Otterbein University men's basketball team prevail over Waynesburg University 71-54 in the championship game of the Waynesburg Tip Off Tournament.

Four players scored in double figures, led by 15 points from sophomore Dominic Theado. Chase Garito tallied a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds – six on the offensive glass. Kyle Niehaus's 11 points and Brevyn Coleman's 10 points rounded out the double figure scorers for the Cardinals.

From the jump, the Cardinals took control, leading by as many as nine points halfway through the first half. Niehaus buried one of his three 3-pointers during the run before the Jackets chipped away. Despite cutting the lead to four points, Otterbein answered with two more threes off the hand of Niehaus and a bucket from Theado to inflate the lead to double digits. A late 3-pointer from the hosts saw Otterbein holding a 34-28 lead at the half.

Explosive out of the new half, Otterbein opened the second period on a 7-1 run as continued to add to its lead, thanks to hot 3-point shooting from Coleman, Noah Knostman and Carter Piatt-Brown. Junior Noah Gamble converted an old fashioned 3-point play with 10:50 on the clock to extend the Cardinal advantage to 50-33 and keep all of the momentum in Otterbein's favor. For the remainder of the game, the Cards held a double digit lead.

Boosted by the offensive rebounding of Garito and Mike Steel, Otterbein finished with 15 second chance points compared to none from the Yellow Jackets.

On Wednesday, the Cardinals return to the Rike Center for its home opener, hosting the Mount St. Joseph Lions. Tip off is set for 7 p.m.
