Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

No. 20 Cardinals win Battle for the Oar on the road

BEXLEY, Ohio – Tested from start to finish, the No. 20 Otterbein University men's basketball team kept the Oar in Westerville, knocking off Capital University 66-64. With the win, Otterbein improves to 20-3, its first 20 win season since the 2003-04 season.

Jarius Jones scored a Cardinal-best 17 points and hauled in nine rebounds. Dominic Theado added 11 points, as Julian Heckman had another strong evening with 10 points and seven assists.

Off to a slow start, the Cardinals fell behind 9-1 in the early goings. A kickout from Chase Garito found Theado for a 3-pointer, giving Otterbein the momentum it needed to stop the Capital run. Slowly chipping away at Capital's lead, Heckman buried a pull-up three moments later to cut the deficit to 13-10. After a stop at the other end, Heckman made a beautiful pass, hauled in by Theado for a layup to put the Cardinals within one point and forced the Comets into a timeout.

Otterbein continued to push back at Capital's runs. With 10:09 remaining in the opening half, Heckman drained a three from the top of the key for a 20-19 lead, Otterbein's first of the game. The lead was short-lived as the Comets continued to answer any Otterbein momentum. By halftime, the hosts had built a 38-33 lead.

In the second half, a re-energized Cardinal squad battled to regain the lead after slowly chipping away. With just under 12 minutes to play, Heckman found Carter Piatt-Brown for a corner three. The freshman calmly knocked the shot down with ease, building Otterbein's advantage to 48-43.

Otterein held the lead the remainder of the way, but Capital tenaciously found ways to trim the advantage to a one possession game. With eight seconds left and Otterbein up by two, a turnover gave the ball back to the Comets. At the horn, Capital got a decent look at a deep three, but the ball bounced off the back iron to send Otterbein home victorious.

The Cardinals shot 50 percent from beyond the arc, with Heckman and Piatt-Brown knocking down two apiece. On the other end, the Comets connected on just 32 percent of their 3-pointers.

Otterbein heads to Ohio Northern on Wednesday for its final regular season away game. Tip off against the Polar Bears is set for 7 p.m.
