Men's wrestling returns to action at JCU Open

CLEVELAND, Ohio – In one of their final tune-ups before Regionals, the Otterbein University men's wrestling team competed at the JCU Open. There were no team scores in the event, as wrestlers from multiple divisions were in action.

At 133, Ryan Hydorn rebounded from a first round loss to pin Point Park's Preston Chandler in 1:54 in the next round. He finished the day 1-2.

Andrew Sas earned a 16-6 major decision to start the day over Xavier Nguyen (Bluefield State). Finishing fourth in the 141-pound bracket, he pinned his next two opponents in 1:32 and 1:49 after a loss. Sas reached the third place bout with a 10-5 victory over Niko Ferra.

Austin Winn went 1-2 to represent the Cardinals at 149. His win came in a gritty 13-9 decision over Noah Rubial (John Carroll). In the second 149-pound bracket, Otterbein saw Radley Spencer and Zach Orseno compete. Spencer pinned his first opponent and his next in 1:11 before dropping to the consolation bracket. He finished the day with a 2-3 record, placing sixth. Orseno won 8-5 over Gannon's Jeremiah Sawicky and fell in a tight 11-10 match his next bout. The senior was 1-2.

Owen Crabtree was 0-2 in the 157 bracket.

At 165, Carter Mottley started the tournament with a fall in 1:29 over Findlay's Hunter Dietrich. He posted a 2-2 record, adding a fall in 4:50 over Borese Antropov (RIT). In the other 165 bracket, senior Sam Wegesin was 1-2, including a pin in just eight seconds.

Caiden Hooks placed third at 184 pounds. After a first round loss, he earned a 9-3 victory and followed with a pin in 1:14 over JCU's Alex Drees. Hooks advanced to the third place matchup grinding out an 8-7 win over RPI's Matthew Klein.

Rounding out the team at 285, the Cardinals saw Carter Wallace and Matthew Bachie wrestle. Both finished the day 0-2.

Next Saturday, some members of the team will compete at the Adrian Futures Tournament in Adrian, Michigan.
