No. 17 Cardinals come up short at Ohio Northern

ADA, Ohio – Down to the final possession, the No. 17 ranked Otterbein University men's basketball team came up short in a 54-53 decision at Ohio Northern University. In a game that featured seven ties and eight lead changes, the Cardinals were unable to capitalize on their last possession of the night. 

Julian Heckman led Otterbein with 14 points while Jarius Jones and Chase Garito each contributed 11. Heckman and Jones combined for 15 rebounds, with Heckman tallying six assists. 

Neither team led by more than six points in the first half, as Otterbein held the largest lead of the period at 17-11. The Polar bears continued to chip away at the lead, eventually taking a 26-25 advantage into the break. 

In the second half, Otterbein held another six point advantage, but ONU – who already had a Top 25 win under its belt – worked to remain within striking distance. The hosts closed out the final four minutes of the contest on an 8-1 run to secure the upset win. Ohio Northern corralled an offensive rebound and sank the putback with seven seconds to go, giving them a 54-53 lead. At the other end, Otterbein was unable to tie or take the lead, committing a turnover with two seconds on the clock. 

ONU scored 17 points off 15 Cardinal turnovers. The Polar Bear bench also had 27 points compared to 11 by Otterbein.

The Cardinals will close out the regular season on Saturday, hosting Muskingum University for Senior Day. Tip off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
