Baseball opens Hope series

LEWIS CENTER, Ohio – On Friday, the Otterbein University baseball team opened its series against Hope College at Jennings Park. The Flying Dutch used a pair of six-run innings to defeat Otterbein, 18-6.

The Cardinals got on the board first in the home half of the first, when Jack Barber led off the frame with an opposite field single. After swiping second, the freshman came around to score on a two-out base knock off the bat of JT Gels.

Hope tied the game in the second and plated a pair in the top of the third, but Otterbein had an answer to cut the lead to one in the bottom of the third. Barber started off the inning reaching on an error and advanced 90 feet on a passed ball. With Barber on third and one away, Gels rolled over a ball to second, driving in Barber on the RBI groundout. After three, the Flying Dutch led 3-2.

Hope struck for six runs in the top of the fourth to take a sizable 9-2 advantage. Sophomore Calbin Mabry worked a one-out walk and swiped second. Cam Fisher followed by drawing another walk and stealing second after Mabry stole third, putting two in scoring position for pinch hitter Marcus Bush. The sophomore drove in Mabry on an RBI groundout. Rolling the lineup back over to the top, Barber hit an RBI single to center to drive in Fisher. Geoffrey Siess extended the inning with a hustle double to right center, but Hope eliminated the threat by leaving a pair stranded in scoring position.

The Flying Dutch tacked on three more in the sixth and six in the seventh to put the run rule into effect. The Cardinals drove in their final two runs off the bat of Daniel Uhl, smacking a homer to left, driving home Evan Chmielewski

Maverick Rabe (0-2) fanned six hitters through 3.1 innings. As a staff, the Cardinals struck out 12 Hope hitters.

Barber was the lone Cardinal to record a multi-hit game, going 2 for 4 with a RBI. Both Gels and Uhl drove in a pair in the loss.

Tomorrow, the series wraps up with a twinbill at Jennings Park. Game times are scheduled for 12 and 3 p.m.
