Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Defense dominates in win over Heidelberg

TIFFIN, Ohio – Contributions up and down the lineup paced the Otterbein University women's basketball team in a 59-26 win over Heidelberg University. The Cardinals improve to 16-5, 10-2 in the OAC and improve their win streak over the Berg to 17 straight contests.

Otterbein led 23-5 after one quarter and never looked back, forcing the Student Princes into tough shots and capitalizing on miscues by the hosts. Abby Rawlings led the Cardinals with 11 points, sinking three 3-pointers in the first half alone. The trio of Kiara Hudgins, Mattie Walburn and Anna Waskiewicz delivered solid performances, all scoring eight points apiece.

In the second quarter, the Cardinals continued to inflate its lead over a struggling Heidelberg team, keeping all of the momentum in favor of Otterbein. By halftime, Otterbein held a commanding 40-10 edge over the Berg.

Madilyn Stechschulte pulled down a team-best 10 rebounds in the win. Both Waskiewicz and Cameron Sparks were busy on the boards as well, each recording eight rebounds. Waskiewicz had a complete all-around day, adding three steals as well. Rawlings also collected three steals.

Backed by Stechschulte and Waskiewicz's efforts on the glass, the Cardinals scored 18 second chance points and limited Heidelberg to just four. Otterbein added 21 points off 22 Student Prince turnovers and scored 15 points in transition.

The 26 points were the least allowed by Otterbein since Feb. 11, 2023 – also against the Student Princes. The Cardinals allowed five points or less in the first three stanzas to cruise past the Berg.
Otterbein travels to Wilmington College on Wednesday for the second matchup of the season with the Quakers. Tip off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
