Women's tennis secures first win of the season

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Otterbein University women's tennis team wrapped up its 2026 Spring Break trip by picking up its first win of the season. After a tough 6-1 loss to Wheaton (MA) on Thursday, the Cardinals turned in a 6-1 win against Olivet Nazarene on Friday. 

WHEATON 6, OTTERBEIN 1

The matchup began with singles play as the Lyons showcased their depth winning each match. At No. 1 singles, Breanna Ball fell by scores of 6-1, 6-0. Niya Bell would put up a tough fight at No. 3 singles taking the first set 6-1, before losing the next two 6-2, 1-0 (10-3).
 
Doubles was highly contested and where the Cardinals did their damage earning the lone point of the match with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Breanna Ball and Raina Smith dispatched the Wheaton duo with a 6-0 score and Caitlin Pennington and Molly Jones defeated their opponents, 6-3.

OTTERBEIN 6, OLIVET NAZARENE 1

The Cardinals swept all three doubles matches to secure the doubles point. At No. 1 doubles, Niya Bell and Taryn Simmers earned a 6-3 victory. Raina Smith and Breanna Ball followed with a 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles before Molly Jones and Caitlin Pennington completed the sweep with a 6-1 decision at No. 3 doubles.

In singles play, Ball battled to a 6-3, 7-5 victory at No. 1 singles to extend the Cardinals' lead. Simmers followed with a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles. At No. 3 singles, Bell delivered one of the most dramatic matches of the day, rallying from a set down to win 3-6, 7-5, 7-6 (5-0).

Pennington controlled her match at No. 4 singles, earning a 6-2, 6-1 victory. Jones added the final point for Otterbein with a commanding 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 5 singles.

The Cardinals will host John Carroll University on Mar. 21.
