Cardinals rally past unbeaten Oberlin in fifth straight win

OBERLIN, Ohio — The Otterbein University women's lacrosse team erased a four-goal deficit and scored the final two goals of the night Wednesday evening, rallying past previously unbeaten Oberlin College 9-8 inside Knowlton Stadium.

Otterbein has now won five straight games and moves to 6-2 overall on the season. The Cardinals also handed Oberlin its first loss of the year, coming on the heels of giving Adrian its only defeat of the season in the previous contest.

Freshman Leela Henry and junior Alyssa Glenn each scored three goals to lead the Cardinal attack. Freshman Madi McIntosh added two goals, while senior Ava Robey finished with a goal and two assists. Glenn also controlled a game-high five draws. In goal, sophomore Alayna Bogner made three saves in the opening half before freshman Kristina Pérez entered after the break and recorded three saves to earn the win.

Oberlin came out quickly and built a 3-0 lead in the opening quarter before extending the margin to 4-0 early in the second. Otterbein finally got on the board when Robey found the net, and Henry later scored off a Robey assist to cut the deficit in half.

The Yeowomen answered with a goal in the final second of the half to take a 5-2 lead into the break, and then pushed the advantage back to four in the third quarter.

Otterbein responded with its biggest stretch of the night. Henry started the rally before McIntosh scored twice late in the third, including a free-position goal, to bring the Cardinals within 7-5 entering the fourth quarter.

The comeback continued from there. Henry opened the fourth-quarter scoring and Glenn followed soon after to tie the game at 7-7. Oberlin briefly regained the lead, but Glenn answered again to even the score at 8-8.

The decisive moment came with 4:03 remaining, when Glenn scored on a man-up opportunity off an assist from Robey to put the Cardinals in front for good. Otterbein then held off Oberlin over the closing minutes to secure the one-goal victory.

Otterbein will begin Ohio Athletic Conference play next Wednesday, March 25, traveling to Ohio Northern for a 7 p.m. start in Ada, Ohio.
