MLAX rolls past Heidelberg in OAC opener

TIFFIN, Ohio – Backed by a 7-goal third quarter, the Otterbein University men's lacrosse team rolled past Heidelberg in its OAC opener, 17-3. Otterbein improves to 4-4 overall and has now won three contests in a row.

Jack Regruth led all players with seven points, scoring three goals and dishing out four assists. He was one of four Cardinals who recorded a hat trick, joined by Zach Mulligan, Gabe Thayer and Max Luther. Mulligan added a trio of assists in the road win.

It was a slow start for the Cardinals, who held a 2–1 lead after the first quarter. Andrew Lewis and Mulligan accounted for Otterbein's goals in the opening period. The visitors added four more in the second quarter to take a 6–2 lead into halftime. Isaiah Smith connected with Nick King for a man-down strike, and after a Heidelberg goal, Otterbein closed the half with three straight scores. A goal from Thayer, along with a pair of man-up goals from Regruth, capped the first-half scoring.

In the third quarter, the Cardinals pulled away with seven goals, four of which came on man-up opportunities. Mulligan netted two, while Regruth and senior Marcus Wright each added one. Before the quarter ended, Luther scored twice and Jack Kennedy added his first goal of the day. Otterbein carried that momentum into the final quarter, scoring four more times to secure the conference victory.

As a team, the Cardinals were 17 of 23 from the X, with Sam Becker winning 13 of 16 faceoffs and picking up five ground balls. Senior Theron Cable led the defense with three caused turnovers. Otterbein outshot the Berg, 58-27 and was a near-perfect 32 of 33 on the clear.

In goal, a trio of Cardinals combined to keep the Student Princes at bay. Zach Courie earned the victory, collecting two saves in 37 minutes of action. Will Hoschak and Matthew Steinmetz played the final 23 minutes, combining for seven saves.

Otterbein will host Ohio Northern on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. face off.
