Powell ties Fishbaugh's win record, baseball defeats MSJ

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Backed by five strong relief innings from Brady McClain, the Otterbein University baseball team defeated Mount St. Joseph, 6-3. With the win, head coach George Powell earned his 624th career victory, tying the legendary Dick Fishbaugh for the most wins in program history.

McClain threw five scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and striking out four hitters. He allowed just one free pass to earn the win for the Cardinals. The offense was led by sophomore Braylon Boggs, who was 3 for 4 with two runs scored. Junior outfielder Nolan James was 1 for 3 with three RBI in the win.

MSJ scored in the top of the first on a fielder's choice and looked to add more in the second. With runners at second and third and nobody out, starter Andrew Kitts induced a popout in foul territory, where freshman catcher Jack Barber made a sliding catch for the first out of the inning. Two batters later with the bases loaded and one away, Calvin Mabry made a tremendous catch in center on a sinking line drive, allowing the Cardinals to escape the frame with no damage.

Otterbein took that momentum into the bottom of the frame to tie the game. JT Gels led off the inning with a walk and moved 90 feet when Daniel Uhl successfully bunted him over. Two hitters later, the Cardinal first baseman came around to score on a MSJ error to tie the game at 1-1.

Otterbein took the lead for good in the bottom of the third. Boggs led off the frame with an infield single and moved into scoring position when Calvin Mabry walked. Another Lion error allowed Boggs to score for a 2-1 lead. James followed with a sac fly to right for a 3-1 advantage through three.

The Cardinals scored three much-needed insurance runs in the fourth. Freshman Geoffrey Siess worked a one-out walk and a double from Boggs put a pair in scoring position. Mabry beat out a bunt single to load the bases with just one away. Jack Barber smacked an RBI groundout the other way to drive in Siess. James followed with a single to right center, plating Boggs and Mabry for a 6-1 lead.

Mount St. Joseph scored twice in the eighth, but Otterbein was able to escape the jam with a strikeout and a flyout. In the ninth, Riley Abrams came in with a runner on first, inducing a fielder's choice and striking out the final two batters to earn the save.

Otterbein will host Manchester tomorrow for a 4 p.m. single game at Fishbaugh Field.
