Quakers take two from softball

WILMINGTON, Ohio – On Saturday, the Otterbein University softball team was swept by Wilmington College, 4-0 and 7-6.

The Cardinals struggled offensively in the first game, held scoreless by the Quakers. Wilmington struck for three runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back, tacking on an insurance run in the fifth. Otterbein's five hits all came from the top of the lineup, leaving six runners on base in game one.

In the nightcap, Otterbein exploded for three runs in the top of the first inning. Caitlin Wilkins reached on a bunt single and moved 60 feet when Kayla Ferrell singled through the left side. Freshman Alex Ward drove in the first run with a single the other way before Kaylie Eichorn added an RBI single of her own to plate Maggie McVicker. With the bases loaded, Emily Black was hit by a pitch to bring in the third Otterbein run of the frame.

The lead was short-lived, with the Quakers answering back with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Wilmington added a pair in the third for a 5-3 advantage through three. McVicker cut into the Wilmington lead in the fourth with an RBI double to drive in Wilkins.

Otterbein regained the lead in the top of the sixth. Mae Meldrum was hit by a pitch and Black smacked a single, putting runners at the corners with two out. McVicker reached on an error by the Quaker centerfielder, plating both runners for a 6-5 lead. Once again, that lead would not last long, with Wilmington taking a 7-6 lead in the bottom of the inning, retiring the Cardinals in order in the seventh.

Wilkins and Ferrell combined for five hits in game two.

Otterbein returns home on Wednesday for a non-conference twinbill against Denison University. Games are set for 3 and 5 p.m.
