Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball walks off WIlmington twice in OAC sweep

WESTERVILLE – In dramatic fashion, the Otterbein University baseball team swept Wilmington College on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals dominated game one, 11-1 in a run-rule victory before going on to win the nightcap in extras on a walkoff home run.

In game one, Daniel Uhl crushed two home runs, driving in three in the opener. Nolan James powered the Cardinals to the game two win with a walkoff home run, recording three of the four Otterbein RBI.

GAME ONE: Otterbein 11 Wilmington 1 (7 innings)

Scoreless through three, Uhl got the Cardinals on the board with a home run the other way for a 1-0 lead. Cam Fisher followed with a solo shot of his own, his third long ball of the season, putting the hosts ahead 2-0.

Wilmington scored its lone run in the top of the fifth, but the Cardinals scored six in the home half of the inning on five hits and a pair of Quaker miscues. Four straight hits inflated the lead to 4-1. Freshman Jack Barber led off the inning with a single and James followed with another. JT Gels smacked a grounder up the middle to drive in Barber and Uhl padded the lead with a line drive to center.

With runners at first and second and nobody out, Fisher went to lay down a sac bunt. The Quaker catcher's throw sailed into right field, allowing Gels to score. With Uhl headed to third, the Wilmington right fielder followed with an errant throw, sending Uhl home and Fisher to third.  Dean Orchard's RBI fielder's choice vaulted the Cardinal lead to 7-1. Otterbein capped off the scoring thanks to an RBI groundout off the bat of Calvin Mabry

Otterbein plated a pair of runs in the sixth off Uhl's second home run of the afternoon – a no-doubter over the fence in left. Needing just one run in the bottom of the seventh to earn the run-rule, Orchard was plunked to lead off the frame and stole second. After moving 90 feet on a sac bunt, Barber drove in Orchard on a base hit down the left field line to win the first game.

Freshman Nick Mealey earned the win on the bump. Mealey went the distance, limiting the Quakers to just three hits while fanning six.

GAME TWO: Otterbein 4 Wilmington 3 (10 innings)

In a true pitcher's duel in game two, the Cardinals broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the fifth. With the bases loaded and one out, Mabry lifted a sac fly the other way to drive in Gavin Scott for a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, James smoked a 2-run opposite field single to boost the lead to 3-0.

Wilmington struck for three unearned runs in the ninth to send the game into extra innings. In the bottom of the tenth, James belted a walkoff 2-out home run to left center on the first pitch of the at bat to complete the Cardinal sweep.

Freshman Riley Abrams earned the win in relief, tossing 1.1 innings and allowing just one Quaker hit.

James was 4 for 5 in the second game with three RBI.

On Tuesday, the Cardinals head to Ohio Wesleyan for a single game against the Battling Bishops. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
