Baseball bests Bluffton on the road, 11-6

BLUFFTON, OhioGavin Scott's four-RBI performance lifted the Otterbein University baseball team to an 11-6 win over Bluffton University. He delivered a pair of two-run singles to pace the Cardinal offense.

Otterbein got on the board first in the top of the second, as Cam Fisher led off the frame with a first pitch ground rule double. Dean Orchard and Max Rubins reached, loading the bases for the top of the order in Calvin Mabry. The sophomore hit a bloop single to shallow right center, bringing in Fisher for the first run of the game. Catcher Jack Barber followed with an RBI sac bunt for a 2-0 Cardinal lead.

Bluffton took the lead in the bottom of the third, scoring three runs off two hits and a hit batsman. The Beavers extended their lead to 5-2 in the fourth, and would be held scoreless until the ninth inning.

Nolan James hit an opposite field single in the fifth and moved to second when JT Gels poked one the other way. With two outs, Fisher lined a base hit to left, driving in James to cut the Beaver lead to 5-3.

Otterbein regained the lead in the top of the seventh, thanks to a three-run inning aided by a pair of Bluffton errors. Barber reached on an error and moved to second to lead off the inning, and James drove him in with an RBI single to put the Cardinals within a run. With James and Fisher in scoring position, Scott grounded a ball that tipped off the third baseman's glove for an infield single, allowing both runners to score for a 6-5 lead.

Looking for insurance in the eighth, the Cardinals received that and more with a 5-run inning. Rubins led off the inning with a single and came around to score on a Barber double. With the bases loaded and two out, Fisher drew a bases loaded walk to extend the lead to 8-5. Scott followed with a 2- run single to right before the rally was capped off with Fisher's steal of home.

Fisher was 2 for 2 with a pair of RBI and three runs scored. James also scored three times in the win, recording a multi-hit afternoon as well. As a team, Otterbein stole six bases, seeing Fisher and Scott each swipe a pair.

Darren Ramsey (2-2) earned the win in relief, tossing 3.1 scoreless innings, allowing just three hits.

Otterbein heads to Heidelberg on Saturday for an OAC twinbill against the Student Princes. Game times in Tiffin are set for 1 and 4 p.m.
