Game Recap: Softball |

Tigers take two from softball

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – In their non-conference finale, the Otterbein University softball team dropped two games to Wittenberg University. The Tigers held on for a tight 3-2 win in game one before scoring 13 runs in a 13-2 win in the nightcap.

GAME ONE: Wittenberg 3 Otterbein 2

The Tigers wasted no time getting on the board, plating three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Those three runs would be all Wittenberg would need, able to fend off the Cardinals throughout the contest.

Otterbein broke through in the fifth. Alex Ward led off the frame with a single before junior Maggie McVicker provided the big blow – a 2-run home run to cut the deficit to one run. Despite the momentum, Otterbein could not push across the tying run.

Ward and Kaylie Eichorn each recorded two hits, with Eichorn recording a stolen base. Caitlin Wilkins was 1 for 2 and drew a pair of walks.

As a team, Otterbein left 10 runners stranded in the game one loss.

GAME TWO: Wittenberg 13 Otterbein 2 (5 innings)

In the second game, the Tigers once again utilized a 3-run first inning to strike early. Otterbein scored both runs in the second inning, with Emily Black and Lindsay Hubaker smacking singles. With two outs, Wilkins drove an RBI single up the middle to plate Black for the first Cardinal run. On the next pitch, Rachel Miller singled through the left side to bring around Hubaker for a 3-2 Wittenberg lead.

After the Tigers tacked on a run in the bottom of the second, the hosts exploded for a seven run fourth to take a commanding lead over the Cardinals. Wilkins and Miller were each 3 for 3 in the nightcap and both senior outfielders drove in a run.

The Cardinals will close out the season this Saturday with a doubleheader against Capital University. In the Battle for the Oar, Otterbein will host the Comets for games at 1 and 3 p.m.
