Game Recap: Softball |

Ward's walkoff helps softball salvage split

WESTERVILLE – A walkoff winner!

Down to their final out, Emma Calkins roped a game-tying double down the line and freshman Alex Ward followed with the walkoff single the other way, helping the Otterbein softball team salvage a split with Wooster on Tuesday. Wooster took the first game in decisive fashion, 18-2, before Otterbein rallied to win the nightcap, 6-5.

GAME ONE: Wooster 18 Otterbein 2 (5 innings)

The story was all Wooster in the opener, as the visitors pounded out 18 hits. Otterbein scored its two runs in the home half of the fourth inning. Ella Pfaffl doubled down the left field line to lead off the inning. Two batters later, Ciana D'Antoni traded places with Pfaffl with a two-bagger of her own to put the Cardinals on the board.

With runners at the corners and one away, senior Lexi Hart lifted a sac fly to left, driving in D'Anoni to cap off the scoring in game one. Freshman Kayla Ferrell led the Otterbein offense with a pair of hits.

GAME TWO: Otterbein 6 Wooster 5

After Wooster scored in the top of the first, the Cardinals answered with three runs in the bottom of the frame. Caitlin Wilkins led off the game belting her first home run of the season to tie the game immediately. Rachel Miller smacked a single up the middle and junior Maggie McVicker followed, blasting a 2-run home run onto the roof of the Clements Recreation Center for a 3-1 advantage.

The Fighting Scots punched back in the third inning, scoring four runs with a two-out rally to hold a 5-3 advantage. In the fourth, Otterbein capitalized on a miscue by the Scots defensively to trim the deficit to one run.

In the top of the seventh, Wooster loaded the bases, but Kiley King induced a groundout to third to keep it a one run game heading into the bottom of the inning.

Kaylie Eichorn smacked a one-out single through the left side to put the tying run on base. Down to their final out, McVicker sent a shallow fly ball to center, out of the reach of a sliding Scot, moving the tying run into scoring position. Calkins smoked a double down the line, driving in Eichorn to tie the game and sending pinch runner Farrell to third to put the winning run 60 feet away. On a 2-2 count, Ward ripped a line drive the other way, just past the diving Wooster right fielder, plating Farrell and giving Otterbein the victory.

King earned the win in relief, throwing one scoreless inning.

The Cardinals will have a quick turnaround, hosting Ohio Northern on Wednesday in OAC action. Game times against the Polar Bears are slated for 1 and 3 p.m.
