Baseball drops two close contests at ONU

ADA, Ohio – In a pair of close games, the Otterbein University baseball team dropped an OAC twinbill to Ohio Northern on Wednesday. The Cardinals fell in the opener 9-7 before falling in walkoff fashion, 4-3 in game two.

GAME ONE: Ohio Northern 9 Otterbein 7

The Polar Bears jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first before Otterbein answered with a four spot in the top of the second. JT Gels and Daniel Uhl smacked back to back singles before Cam Fisher drove in Gels for the first Cardinal run. Two batters later, Braylon Boggs drove in Uhl on a groundout to cut the deficit to 3-2. A Dean Orchard single followed by an ONU error pushed the visitors ahead 4-3.

ONU tied the game in the bottom of the inning and scored twice in the third for a 6-4 advantage. The Polar Bears would go on to extend their lead to 8-4 after seven innings before Otterbein added one more in the eighth, thanks to a solo shot off the bat of Gavin Scott. The final two Otterbein runs also came via the long ball – a 2-run blast by Nolan James in the top of the ninth, but the Cardinals left the tying run stranded.

Jack Barber was 3 for 3 to lead the Cardinals, as Fisher and Scott each contributed 2-hit performances.

GAME TWO: Ohio Northern 4 Otterbein 3

Otterbein struck first in the nightcap, with Scott driving in Gels on an RBI groundout. The Polar Bears had an immediate response with two runs in the home half of the inning, taking a 2-1 lead. Otterbein added a run in the third when James recorded an RBI single to left, plating Calvin Mabry to tie the game .

James drove in his second run of the game in the fifth to give Otterbein a 3-2 lead. Max Rubins led off the frame reaching on an error and later scored on a sac fly the other way off the bat of James. The lead was short-lived, as ONU tied the contest in the bottom of the inning.

ONU won the game in the bottom of the ninth on a walkoff single that followed a leadoff triple.

On Saturday, the Cardinals will host Wilmington College. Games against the Quakers are scheduled for 1 and 4 p.m.
