Baseball wraps up season with split at Capital

BEXLEY, Ohio – On Saturday, the Otterbein baseball team's season came to a close in a split at Capital University. The Cardinals won the opener, 7-0, before falling in the second game, 6-1.

GAME ONE: Otterbein 7 Capital 0

The Cardinals got out to a quick 2-0 lead after one. Calvin Mabry worked a leadoff walk and moved to second when Nolan James beat out an infield single. JT Gels brought in the first run on a fielder's choice and the visitors doubled their lead thanks to an RBI from Cam Fisher

Otterbein doubled its lead in the second with another pair of runs. With the bases loaded and two out, James ripped a single to center field to plate Max Rubins, who singled earlier in the frame. Gels extended the lead to 4-0 with a double down the right field line, bringing home Jack Barber

Otterbein tacked on three runs in the sixth, aided by a Capital error. Sophomore Gavin Scot and freshman Dean Orchard recorded run-scoring hits in the inning, building the advantage to 7-0.

Freshman Nick Mealey threw seven shutout innings, striking out eight. He allowed just four hits and walked three to earn the win. Russ Wight pitched the final two innings, striking out four and allowing no hits.

Five Cardinals finished with multi-hit performances, led by four hits from Gels and three from Scott.

GAME TWO: Capital 6 Otterbein 1

In the second game, the Comets scored three runs in the bottom of the first to claim the early advantage. The hosts added two in the fifth and one in the sixth to inflate the lead to 6-0. Otterbein got on the board in the top of the eighth when Scott smoked a double to left center to drive in Fisher.

Otterbein was limited to two hits in the nightcap, coming from Fisher and Scott.

The Cardinals conclude the 2026 campaign 10-26.
