Wright earns 400th career win against (RV) Wittenberg

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – In a matchup of two teams receiving votes in the AVCA Top 25 Poll, the Otterbein University volleyball team picked up a gritty 3-2 victory over Wittenberg University. With the win, head coach Monica Wright earned her 400th career win – coming against her alma mater. 

Emerson Baum and Lexi Scott each finished with 18 kills and attacked at a .317 clip, pacing Otterbein's offense. Sophomore Claire Baker ended the night with eight kills, swinging at a .400 mark and added five total blocks. 

Despite Otterbein's early lead in the opening set, the Tigers rallied to even the score at 17. Otterbein immediately answered with a 6-0 run to hold a 23-17 lead late in the set. The Cardinals secured the set when Baker and Elise Adelman blocked a Tiger attacker for a 25-19 win. 

An 8-0 run by Wittenberg turned a 15-9 deficit into a 17-15 lead. The teams traded points until the Tigers claimed a 28-18 lead. Otterbein fired off five straight points, but Wittenberg halted any momentum by scoring the next two points for a 25-23 win. 

Otterbein commanded the third set and utilized a 4-0 run to win by a 25-20 margin. Once again, Baker and Adelman sealed the deal with a double block on set point to push the Cardinals one set away from the victory. The Tigers answered in the fourth, withstanding another late Otterbein run to win 25-22 and force a decisive fifth set. 

Wittenberg jumped out to an early lead until the Cardinals stormed back to turn an 8-6 deficit to a 10-8 lead. In that stretch, Baum recorded three kills and tallied a block. Wittenberg continued to keep the score close until Baker teamed up with Makenzie Schellenberger for a block to end the evening on a 15-13 win. 

Adelman led both teams with 48 assists and totaled eight service aces, along with five assisted blocks. Defensively, three Cardinals picked up at least 10 digs, with Chandler Crowell and Ashley Kefauver recording 14 apiece. Senior Emma Steiger collected 10 digs in the win. 

Backed by Adelman at the service line, Otterbein finished with 15 aces. Otterbein recorded 10 total blocks compared to three from Wittenberg. 

On Saturday, the Cardinals will host Franciscan University for a 10 a.m. match before ending the weekend with another tough opponent in (RV) Washington & Lee at 12:30 p.m.
