Pioneers push past football on Homecoming

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – A strong Marietta defense was too much for the Otterbein University football team, falling 42-7 in its Homecoming matchup.

Marietta used 22 first quarter points to build a sizable lead and never look back. After a touchdown on its opening drive, Marietta blocked a punt for a safety on the ensuing Otterbein possession. The Pioneers quickly scored on their next drive to inflate the lead to 15-0 and tack on a third touchdown before the end of the period. In the second quarter, the visitors tacked on a 30-yard field goal for a 25-0 halftime lead. 

Otterbein took advantage of a short field in the third quarter. On Marietta's first drive of the third, Carter Sleet picked off Joe Tenta and returned it 15 yards to the Marietta 16. The Cardinals converted a clutch third and nine, with Kace Kinnamon completing a pass to Matt Griffin for a 12-yard gain. Two plays later on a designed run, Kinnamon had one man to beat and dove into the nearside pylon for the Otterbein touchdown. 

Marietta added 17 second half points to leave Memorial Stadium with the road win, improving to 3-1, 2-1 in the OAC. The Cardinals fall to 1-3 overall, 1-2 in conference play.

Freshman Eli Helton continued his impressive first season with the Cardinals, leading the hosts with 10 total tackles. Cayden Lassiter added eight total tackles, with Sleet and Amor Coachman intercepting passes.

Next Saturday, the Cardinals remain home for one final non-conference contest, welcoming Manchester University to town. Kick off against the Spartans is set for 1:30 p.m.
