WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The No. 16 Otterbein men's soccer team defeated visiting John Carroll, 2-1 in their homecoming evening matchup at Memorial Stadium.
The Cardinals struck first in the eighth minute when Mitch Wheeler headed home a free kick from Nate Werthmuller to give Otterbein an early 1-0 lead.
The Blue Streaks answered in the 20th minute to knot the score at 1-1, which concluded the scoring in the first half.
Play remained even in the beginning of the second half with both teams trading possession, battling for the go-ahead goal. Otterbein ultimately broke through in the 60th minute when Wheeler found the back of the net with another header off a free kick from Werthmuller, putting the Cardinals ahead 2-1.
Otterbein was able to retain their lead through the remainder of the contest. The Cardinals controlled the attacking opportunities throughout the match, holding a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Jayden Burdine played the entire 90 minutes and tallied two saves on the evening.
Men's soccer will return to action Wednesday, Sept. 30, when Otterbein hosts Wittenberg at Memorial Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
