Football falls in opener against (RV) Calvin

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – In its 2026 season debut, the Otterbein University football team suffered a 53-21 setback at the hands of (RV) Calvin University).

Calvin jumped out to a 25-0 lead before Otterbein got on the board late in the first half. Kace Kinnamon connected with freshman Daniel Shaffer for a 45-yard touchdown pass over the middle for Otterbein's first score of the afternoon. Braylon Balandra converted the PAT to get the hosts on the board before the break.

The Knights continued to increase their lead until the final two Otterbein scores came in the fourth quarter. Sophomore Duke Corley led the Cardinals to a 7-play, 75-yard touchdown drive. The drive was capped when Corley found Caden Fabb for a 27-yard pass and Fabb's first collegiate touchdown.

Late in the fourth, the Cardinal defense put points on the board when a high snap by Calvin was picked up by Troy Montgomery for a 57-yard scoop and score. For the third time in as many tries, Balandra successfully converted the point after to complete the scoring for the afternoon.

Shaffer's 51 receiving yards led the Cardinals, with eight different players making catches. Montgomery's 14 tackles led the defense, with Eli Helton adding nine total tackles.

Calvin was an efficient 3 of 3 on fourth quarter conversions, while Otterbein was 0 for 2.

Next Saturday, the Cardinals host Heidelberg University in the Rhine River Cup. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
