Wallace's two-goal effort lifts men's soccer over Carnegie Mellon

WESTERVILLE, Ohio – A pair of second half goals from Lincoln Wallace erased a halftime deficit, as the Otterbein University men's soccer team knocked off Carnegie Mellon, 2-1. With the win, the Cardinals open the young season 2-0-0 overall. 

The Tartans got on the board in the 24th minute when Miguel Larrainzar played a ball to Sola Nishimura. Larrainzar slipped behind the Cardinal defense before Nishimura connected with him, burying a shot to claim a 1-0 advantage. 

Wallace netted the equalizer in the 64th minute. A foul by CMU gave the ball to Otterbein, where Nate Werthmueller quickly played the ball ahead to Wallace. The sophomore beat his defender and rifled a shot past the outstretched Tartan goalkeeper to tie the score at 1-1. 

Otterbein went ahead for good in the 81st minute, thanks to the second goal of the afternoon by Wallace. Alex Greene won a ball played by the Carnegie Mellon keeper and found Josh Lord. Lord connected with a streaking Fabirzio Fiorini up the left sideline. Fiorini, a freshman, crossed a ball into the box where Wallace's header bounced into the back of the net for a 2-1 lead with less than 10 minutes remaining. 


The Tartans had one good look at the equalizer late in the contest, but Ian Kim's shot was directly at Cardinal keeper Jayden Burdine who notched the save. Burdine totaled two saves in the win. 

Otterbein outshot the visitors by a 17-11 margin. The Cardinals also held the edge in corners (7-2). 

On Wednesday, the Cardinals host Ohio Wesleyan for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
