Dave Ewing returned for his second stretch as an assistant for Otterbein in 2017, previously spending an initial 17-year stint as the program’s pitching coach from 1993-2010.
A 1957 graduate of Columbus West High School, a 1962 graduate of Otterbein College and a 1968 master’s graduate from Xavier University, Ewing was an outfielder for the Cardinals before launching his career as a teacher and coach.
Ewing taught and coached at Dublin High School for five years before entering the Columbus City School system for the next 25. He spent the final 12 years of his career as head baseball coach at Walnut Ridge High School in Columbus.
While at Walnut Ridge, his team won five City League South division titles, four city championships (1986, 1988, 1989, 1991), four sectional titles and a district championship in 1991, when the team later lost in the regional finals. He won over 200 games, coached 39 All-City League players, 12 All-District Players, and five All- Ohio selections. He was selected City League “Coach of the Year” four times and has coached in the Central District All-Star game twice.
Ewing was inducted into the Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1999 and was a member of the first Central District Hall of Fame class in 2000. In addition, he was Central District president in 1986 and served on the OHSBCA Board of Directors as District Rep, State Poll Director and Secretary/Treasurer from 1987-2000.
Ewing has spoken at numerous camps/clinics throughout the state and, during the summer from 2001-2010, traveled to England, Germany, Switzerland, and Sweden as an envoy coach for Major League Baseball International.
Dave and his wife Pat, who have been married 48 years, have three children; daughter, Beth, and sons, Jeff and Greg, who are all graduates of Otterbein. Ewing has four grandchildren as well.
