Cooper's Two Scores Help Cards Roll Over Marietta

Written Oct. 7, 2009 by Adam Prescott

WESTERVILLE, OHIO – 12th-ranked Otterbein cruised its way to a 3-0 victory over Marietta in conference action Wednesday afternoon behind two goals from senior forward Megan Cooper.

The team, winners of nine straight, improves its season record to 10-1 and now stands at 2-0 in league play.

Substituting into the game at the 22:38 mark of the opening half, Cooper wasted no time getting into the action; tallying her first goal of the season in the 27th minute after sophomore Adrienne Novak fed her a pass from the opposite post inside the 18-yard box.

Less than eight minutes later, the London native converted a header from seven yards out to the top right corner to extend the Cardinal lead to 2-0. Novak tallied her second assist of the match on the play.

OC would take a 2-0 lead heading into the break.

The Otterbein defense stayed consistent and wouldn’t budge in the second half, as the Pioneers were unable to get off a shot attempt.

With less than one minute remaining, junior midfielder Ashley Payne scored her first goal of the fall and second of her career with a header that bounced off the hands of the Marietta goalie and over the goal line. Junior Rachel Degen was credited with the assist.

The Cards held a dominant 35-2 shot advantage, including a 22-0 edge in the second half of play. Pioneer keeper Jenna Freeman was forced to make 11 saves while Tara Carter stopped one shot in goal for Otterbein.

OC took 14 corner kicks and did not allow Marietta to attempt any.

The team returns to action Saturday evening when they travel to play Baldwin-Wallace. Starting time from Berea is scheduled for 7 p.m.
