Box Score
WESTERVILLE, OHIO - Otterbein (1-10, 0-2 OAC) dropped a 1-0 contest with visiting Heidelberg (8-3, 2-0 OAC) Wednesday afternoon at Clements Field.
The first half saw tough defensive play from both sides, and neither team saw many strong opportunities.
Otterbein saw maybe its best chance in the 21st minute when senior Mike Townsend had a clear path to the goal, and a charging Heidelberg goalkeeper came out to trip Townsend just outside of the box.
After a red card, the Cards were given a free kick just beyond the left corner of the box, but the attempt sailed high and out of bounds.
The game would head to halftime locked in the 0-0 tie.
Townsend saw another opportunity just minutes into the second frame, but saw his shot go right of the goal to keep the game scoreless.
Heidelberg scored the difference maker moments later (49:38) when Mike Harling took a centered pass off the right baseline from teammate Cory Buhrman and blasted it home for the 1-0 lead.
Freshman Jordan Ricks got free towards a cross into the box late in the second half, but eventually collided with Heidelberg keeper Mike Kenny, who was able to hang on and make the stop.
The Cardinals pressed down the stretch, but were unable to find the back of the net en route to the 1-0 defeat.
Otterbein held a slim 9-8 advantage in shots, and also held a 5-4 edge on corner kicks.
Kenny and starting goalkeeper Ryan Smith combined for five saves for the Student Princes, while Otterbein's Alex Kamphaus came up with two stops. The game saw a combined 32 fouls called.
The Cards return to action Saturday afternoon, staying at home to host conference opponent Baldwin-Wallace at Clements Field. Starting time is set for 3:30 p.m.
