B-W Slips Past Otterbein 35-34

Box Score

BEREA, OHIO—Baldwin-Wallace scored with two minutes to play to slip past Otterbein, 35-34, Saturday afternoon in Finnie Stadium in Berea.

With the win, the Yellow Jackets improved to 5-0 overall and remain in a first-place tie with Mount Union, each 4-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). The Cardinals dropped to 3-2 overall and sit in a four-way tie for fourth place with Muskingum, Capital and John Carroll, each 2-2 in the OAC. Otterbein is scheduled to travel to cross-town rival Capital next Saturday for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff.

Following a wild first half in which Baldwin-Wallace returned two kickoffs and one interception for touchdowns; and Otterbein returned one kickoff for a touchdown, the Yellow Jackets took a 28-27 lead into the locker room.

Otterbein took the lead back early in the second half, mounting a 6-play, 97-yard drive capped off by a 3-yard touchdown run from senior running back Colton Coy to make it 34-28 with 9:19 to play in the third quarter. Sophomore wide receiver Ron Smith made a 76-yard reception in the drive.

The Cardinal defense took over, forcing Baldwin-Wallace to punt on its next three possessions and the Otterbein lead looked like it might hold. But with 5:48 to play in the game, B-W covered 59 yards in eight plays, scoring on a 23-yard run from junior running back Tim Miker with 2:02 to go.

Otterbein could not move the ball on its last series, and B-W ran out the clock.

The Cardinals took their first lead of the game, 20-14, when junior quarterback Austin Schlosser hit junior tight end Gabe Shively for a 22-yard touchdown with 10:47 to play in the second quarter.

Undaunted, the Yellow Jackets marched right back, scoring back-to-back touchdowns on a 90-yard kickoff return from freshman wide receiver Josiah Holt and an 88-yard interception return from junior defensive back Matt Bowen to put B-W back on top, 28-20, with 7:43 to play in the first half.

Otterbein closed to within 28-27 with 43 seconds left before halftime when Coy scored his second of three rushing touchdowns on the day with a 14-yard run.

Coy, who leads the OAC in rushing, turned in his fourth 100-yard rushing game of the season, finishing with 111 yards and three touchdowns on 27 carries. He caught four passes for 49 yards.

Junior quarterback Austin Schlosser threw for 251 yards and one touchdown on 17-of-30 passing. He threw one interception.

Graduate wide receiver Steve Kuzyk made five catches for 36 yards. Junior wide receiver Trey Fairchild caught four balls for 41 yards.
