WESTERVILLE, OHIO – Freshman
Allie Schlemitz scored her first two career goals as the Otterbein University women’s soccer team defeated John Carroll University 2-0 Saturday afternoon to open Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play.
The win bumps the Cardinals to 4-4-1 on the season and 1-0 in OAC play, while the loss drops the Blue Streaks to 6-5 this fall, 1-1 against league foes.
Both teams saw chances early on, and the Cardinals would cash in during the 30th minute when Schlemitz found her way to a ball in the box off a corner kick and buried it home. Freshman Lindsay Henderson was credited with an assist on the play.
Otterbein went to halftime ahead 1-0 while holding a slim 4-3 shot advantage.
John Carroll nearly scored early in the second half when Otterbein keeper Melissa Zang stumbled in the box, but a Kelly Kertis shot was cleared off the line by Otterbein defender Jill Knox.
The Cards extended the lead to 2-0 in the 72
nd minute, as junior Emily Bates headed an incoming corner kick into the box and Schlemitz maneuvered her way to the ball yet again, scoring right in front of the net.
“I couldn’t have come to a better school,” Schlemitz said. “These girls are great. We did get off to a rough start but it just took that one goal that Rachel Denz scored against Earlham, and now we’re just going from there.”
Otterbein outshot John Carroll 12-9, and took eight corners compared to JCU’s four.
Both Zang and JCU goalie Haley McDonald tallied three saves each.
Otterbein returns to action Wednesday, Oct. 5, traveling to take on Heidelberg University. Starting time from Tiffin is scheduled for 7 p.m.
