ADA, OHIO – The Otterbein University women’s basketball team upped its season record to 4-0 over the weekend, topping Ohio Wesleyan University 65-50 and St. Mary’s College (Ind.) 75-65 at the Ohio Northern Classic.
The Cardinals overcame an early deficit on day one against Ohio Wesleyan, and eventually took a slim 30-26 lead into halftime.
Otterbein pushed the lead to seven by the 14:23 mark of the second half and maintained a two to three possession advantage as the game clock ticked under ten minutes.
The Bishops closed to within 49-47 with 7:34 remaining, but Otterbein quickly bounced back, ending the game on a 16-3 run for the 65-50 victory.
Junior Hannah Day came off the Cardinal bench to register a game-high 18 points, finishing the contest 6-of-8 from the floor. Senior Kristi Kotterman posted 14 points while junior Rachel Snedegar chipped in 12.
St. Mary’s (Ind.) opened a 23-13 lead in the opening half of day two, only to see Otterbein claw its way back and trail just 31-29 at the half.
The Cards tied the game at 39-39 before taking a 42-41lead moments later on a three-pointer from senior Shea McCoy.
The Belles went on a quick 8-3 run, but Otterbein held its ground and climbed ahead at 54-53 before remaining ahead at 59-57 with six minutes to go. The Cards would show their ability to finish strong again, ending the game on a 15-8 run to secure the 74-65 win.
Kotterman led all scorers with 21 points while McCoy pitched in 16. Kotterman now stands just 53 points shy of 1,000 for her career.
Junior Chelsea Cannon posted ten points and seven rebounds, while freshman Tabatha Piper pulled down a team-best nine boards.
Otterbein shot .450 for the contest compared to St. Mary’s .354.
“We have been getting great minutes from the bench, which is allowing us to finish out games,” head coach Connie Richardson said. “It’s been nice to not have to rely on any one kid. Everyone is contributing is some way.”
The Cardinals return to action Wednesday evening, hosting Oberlin College at 7:30 p.m.
