CINCINNATI, OHIO – The Otterbein University men’s lacrosse team fell to 6-6 on the season Thursday evening after turning up on the wrong side of a 9-8 nailbiter at The College of Mount St. Joseph.
The Lions struck first with an early goal, but the Cards countered to take a 2-1 lead after a goal from Andy Hufford with 11 seconds remaining in the opening quarter.
MSJ tallied the next two goals to take a 3-2 advantage, but Otterbein freshman Mikey O’Neal sent the contest into halftime locked at 3-3 after an unassisted goal with 3:47 to go in the second stanza.
Back-to-back goals from sophomores Andrew Donatelli and Alex Dowell gave the Cardinals a 5-3 lead early in the second half, but the hosts would respond with four goals in a row to grab a 7-5 advantage with 10:47 showing on the fourth-quarter clock.
Refusing to go away, the Cards hung tough and got equalizing goals at the 9:59 and 5:05 marks from sophomore Graham Shippy.
In the end, however, it would be Mount St. Joseph midfielder Cory Wojciechowski who would play the role of hero by scoring the eventual game-winner (man-up) with just under two minutes remaining, and then win the ensuing faceoff to allow the Lions to run out the clock.
MSJ held a 50-35 advantage in shots, and a 24-17 edge in ground balls. The Lions also won 13 of the 19 faceoff opportunities.
Sophomore goalkeeper Adam Hatchard tallied 14 saves in goal for the Cards.
Otterbein returns home to host Thiel College Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium. Starting time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
