LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY – The second-ranked Otterbein women’s soccer team suffered a pair of losses over the weekend at the Transylvania Showcase, falling 2-1 in double overtime to Transylvania (Ky.) on Saturday before a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Centre (Ky.) Sunday afternoon.

Transylvania held a 9-2 shot advantage over the first 45 minutes Saturday afternoon, but the match headed to halftime locked in a scoreless tie.

Otterbein junior Jessica Yaney put the Cardinals ahead 1-0 just minutes into the second half when she headed in a cross from sophomore Abby Misch.

The Cardinals attempted to hold off Transy as the final minutes ticked away, but Alyssa Kruse found space and juked Otterbein goalkeeper Sarah Uhlenbrock to even the contest with under 90 seconds remaining.

The Pioneers would notch the game-winner near the beginning of the second overtime period, using a header off a corner kick from Elizabeth Schmitt to cap a stunning victory and hand Otterbein its first loss since November of 2009.

Transylvania held a 17-11 shot advantage while Otterbein had an 8-3 edge in corners.

Uhelnbrock had five saves for the Cards while Kara Hansel came up with seven in goal for the Pioneers.

The team took the field on day two looking to bounce back against Centre, but the Colonels would register the game’s lone goal in the 24th minute when Morgan Collins rebounded a shot and finished lower left.

The Cardinals held a 7-4 shot advantage and took ten corner kicks compared to just three for Centre.

Melissa Zang went the first 45 minutes between the posts for Otterbein before Uhlenbrock came on for the second half.

Otterbein returns to action Wednesday, hosting 21st-ranked Denison in its home opener at Clements Field. The Cards advanced past the Big Red on penalty kicks in last season’s NCAA Elite 8 match. Starting time Wednesday is slated for 5:30 p.m.
