ALLIANCE, Ohio – The Otterbein University women’s soccer team bounced back from its recent loss Saturday afternoon, leaving the University of Mount Union with a 2-1 victory.
The Cardinals move to 11-5 overall and a league-best 6-1 in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play with the win, and now control their own destiny with two regular season matches to play.
Mount Union now sits 10-5 this season with the loss, falling to 4-3 against OAC opponents in the process.
Otterbein tallied a pair of first-half goals just five minutes apart en route to taking a 2-0 halftime advantage.
Junior Morgan Hendrickson struck first for the Cards, getting an assist from freshman Megan Mills and finishing at the 21:16 mark. Senior Jess Yaney followed with her fourth goal of the season in the 27th minute, corralling a corner kick that deflected off Mount Union keeper Maria Favorite and scoring.
Mount Union’s Jackie Lowdermilk made things slightly interesting late in the match, scoring at the 85:49 mark to prevent Otterbein from posting the shutout.
Otterbein finished the match with a 21-8 edge on shots, including a 10-2 advantage in the second half of play. The Cards also dominated the corner-kick comparison at 12-2.
Cardinal freshman Dana Strimbu tallied three saves in net while Maria Favorite had five of her own.
Otterbein has two home matches to finish out the regular season, hosting Marietta College Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. before cross-town rival Capital University visits Westerville on Saturday.
