No. 11 Volleyball Sweeps Wooster Tri-Match

WOOSTER, Ohio – The No. 11-ranked Otterbein University volleyball team added two more wins to its season total Saturday afternoon, defeating Hiram College and the College of Wooster.

The Cardinals move to 17-6 overall with the victories and will now turn its attention to a home conference match with Ohio Northern University Wednesday evening. Match time is slated for 7 p.m.

Otterbein kicked off Saturday afternoon by erasing a 2-1 set deficit against Hiram, rallying to win in five sets by final counts of 25-19, 23-25, 21-25, 25-13, 15-11.

The senior duo of Michelle Gernert and Kristen Bennett combined for 35 kills against the Terriers, with Gernert’s 19 good enough for a new career-high. To make matters more impressive, she tallied just two errors on 33 total attempts.

Sophomore setter Tabatha Piper handed out 47 assists, while also contributing offensively with nine kills, and no errors, on 20 attacks. Three Cardinals tallied double-digit digs, led by 18 from libero Emily Caldwell.

Otterbein finished the day with a four-set win over Wooster by scores of 25-23, 25-19, 18-25, 25-11.

Bennett carried her momentum over from the first outing, tying a career-best 18 kills and committing just two errors on 34 attempts (.471).

Junior Liz Palmer had 10 kills to go along with three block assists, while Piper finished with eight kills and 45 assists.

Junior Annie Juenger led the way defensively with 18 digs, followed by 15 and 14 from Evelyn Carus and Lauren Beitel, respectively. Juenger and freshman Krystin Estes also tallied seven digs a piece.

The Cardinals finished with a .286 hitting percentage over the combined two matches, and finished strong defensively by holding the host Scots to .165.
