CINCINNATI, OHIO – The Cardinals suffered a disappointing defeat at Mount St. Joseph Wednesday evening, seeing the host Lions pull away in the second half in absorbing a 16-14 loss.
Otterbein (5-10) led 3-1 after ten minutes of play but allowed Mount St. Joseph to score four goals, falling behind 5-3.
The Cards drew even at 5-5 and again at 7-7, but fell behind yet again as the Lions later took an 8-7 lead into halftime.
Otterbein went ahead 10-9 after scoring three of the first four goals to begin the second half, but Mount St. Joseph caught fire to rattle off six-straight goals en route to a 15-10 lead with 14:14 showing on the game clock.
The Cardinals closed the gap to 15-13 with 4:27 to go, but the deficit proved to be too much as the Lions held on for victory.
Johnson led Otterbein with four goals on the evening, while Victoria Blatt, Rebecca Carter, and Courtney Hilfinger all scored three. Amanda Holmes posted a game-high seven goals for Mount St. Joe’s.
Both sides were nearly even in all categories, with the Lions holding a 31-30 shot advantage. The Cardinals managed to convert just 3 of 10 free-position opportunities while MSJ was 4 of 9 its chances.
The Cardinals have the rest of the week off before concluding their season on Tuesday, May 1 at Washington & Jefferson. Starting time is slated for 7 p.m.
