Box Score
GRANVILLE, Ohio – Otterbein University came up short on the road Wednesday evening, allowing an early goal and never being able to pull even en route to a 1-0 loss at the hands of Denison University.
The victory is the first for Denison this season, improving the Big Red to 1-4. The loss takes Otterbein to 4-2 on the season.
Denison’s Andrea Witte put the hosts ahead early, settling a deflection near the penalty dot in the third minute and blasting a shot upper 90.
The Big Red would take a 1-0 lead into the half despite the Cards holding a 7-3 shot advantage and 8-1 edge on corner kicks.
Otterbein freshman Megan McCabe, the reigning Ohio Athletic Conference “Player of the Week”, found some space up the right side early in the second half but saw her shot saved by Denison goalkeeper Andrea Karl.
The Cardinals, playing without senior captain and usual corner kick specialist Rachel Denz (injury), proceeded to take three-straight corners after the Karl save but were unable to cash in on any.
Otterbein saw another opportunity ten minutes later when senior Emily Bates tracked down a ball near the end line, but the ensuing cross into the box went untouched and off towards the far side of the field.
The Cards had one last chance to even the score on a free kick with ten seconds remaining, but the shot stayed on the ground and trickled wide left.
Otterbein nearly double up Denison on shot attempts at 13-6, controlling the majority of possession to also finish with an 11-2 corner advantage.
Otterbein finishes out the week with a 1 p.m. match at Earlham (Pa.) Saturday afternoon.
