WESTERVILLE, Ohio – The Otterbein University women’s soccer team downed Hiram College 3-0 Wednesday afternoon in the Cards home opener at Clements Field.
The Cardinals (2-1) and Terriers (1-2) played to a scoreless tie in the first half with much of the game played on Hiram's side of the field.
Otterbein broke into the scoring column when freshman Jillian Strimbu netted her first-career goal in the 59th minute off of a pass from classmate Megan McCabe. Five minutes later, Strimbu scored her second goal of the afternoon when she headed a ball in off a corner-kick from Rachel Denz.
The Cardinals built their lead to 3-0 in the 69th minute when sophomore Allie Schlemitz headed a ball in off a corner kick from sophomore Alana Gaither.
Otterbein dominated possession of the ball throughout, as the Terriers did not attempt a shot until the 60th minute of the match. For the game, the Cardinals outshot Hiram 22-to-3.
Otterbein’s next test will be in Altoona, Pa. when they play against Moravian on Saturday, Sept. 8 and Penn State-Altoona on Sunday, Sept. 9. Kick-off for both games is scheduled for 3 p.m.
