ADA, Ohio – Otterbein University volleyball suffered a tough three-set loss in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play Tuesday evening, falling 14-25, 21-25, 19-25 at Ohio Northern University.
The loss snaps a nine-match winning streak for the 14th-ranked Cardinals, who fall to 18-5 overall and 3-1 against the league. Northern, meanwhile, moves to 14-7 this fall and 3-1 against the OAC.
The Polar Bears tallied a convincing 25-14 win in the first frame, and later overcame a 16-13 Otterbein lead in the second set to post a 25-21 victory.
Ohio Northern didn't let up in the third frame, jumping ahead 10-6 before the Cards closed to within 12-11 midway through the set. Otterbein was unable to draw even or take the led, seeing the hosts rattle off the next six points to open an 18-11 lead and never look back.
Kaitlann Hogrefe led the way for a staggering offensive performance by the Polar Bears, blasting 12 kills and no errors on 17 total attempts (.706). Kristen Sessler and Ellie Gillespie also had 12 kills apiece as Ohio Northern hit .312 as a team.
Liz Palmer and Kim Barker combined for 15 kills and no errors in the middle for Otterbein while setter Tabatha Piper had 31 assists.
Northern recorded seven service aces throughout the match compared to just one for the Cardinals.
Otterbein finishes out the week at home with another key OAC matchup Friday evening, hosting Heidelberg University in the Rike Center at 7 p.m.
