WESTERVILLE, Ohio – Otterbein University came out victorious Wednesday afternoon in its last non-conference outing of the season, turning back Denison University, 2-0, at Clements Field.
The Cardinals (5-3-1) nearly got on the board in the 13th minute when sophomore Jillian Strimbu re-directed a corner kick towards the goal, but a Denison player was there to clear the ball off the line and keep the match scoreless.
Strimbu found the back of the net the next time around, taking a centered pass from freshman Madison Burchfield and roping a 20-yard shot over the reach of Big Red goalkeeper Andrea Karl.
Otterbein took the lead into halftime, and nearly doubled the advantage when another deep shot from Strimbu at the 64:23 mark sailed just high.
The Cardinals eventually found an insurance goal, seeing freshman Erica Meier score her first-career goal in the 77th minute off an assist from Burchfield. The freshman connection consisted of Burchfield's pass trickling through the box, with Meier on the far side to charge in and finish lower left.
The Cardinal defense would hold strong throughout, getting five saves from sophomore goalkeeper Dana Strimbu en route to the shutout. Denison falls to 4-6 on the season with the loss.
Otterbein finished with a 13-11 shot advantage and 6-5 edge on corner kicks.
The Cards open Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) play this weekend, traveling to Baldwin Wallace University Saturday for a 4:30 p.m. start. The Cards are seeking their fifth OAC crown in the last six years.
